Father's Day reflections: will my kids ride bikes?

Wondering where the influence comes from for this gearhead nonsense

It seems an age since this photo was taken; I still have the Panhead I am sitting on with the kids in the photo, but pretty much everything else in my life has changed. Not least my children: they're still a few years off being teenagers, but the attitude and ranginess of puberty is well in sight.

I was lucky enough to see my dad briefly yesterday; he's 81 now and lives 200 miles away. He's still handsome, healthy and opinionated. He had no interest in motorcycles – the opposite, in fact – so it's amazing to me that both my brother and I ended up bike nuts. Is that normal? Did your dad influence your passions in life?

I have come to the conclusion that all I can do as a father is present different opportunities and pastimes to my kids and see what sparks their interest. I won't be disappointed if they don't end up into what I am, whether it's old bikes, cars, music... whatever. But I hope they'll look back on photos like this with the fondness I already do; being brought up by a gearhead isn't a bad thing, I reckon.

  • Actually I turned my Dad on to motorcycles when I was 18 or 19 and he was 40 or so. He was still on two wheels till he was in his low 80's. I'm 70 and hope to pass him. My son is 35 and wishes he had the time but has always been interested. My wife of 45 years knows about as much as I do about them from shear over exposure.
